Dr Douglas Maclean is a leading surgeon who can help people regain mobility and find relief from arthritis or joint pain through hip arthroscopy, hip replacements using the anterior hip approach and revision hip surgery.
Hip arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that allows doctors to view the hip joint without making a large incision through the skin and other soft tissues making it a minimally invasive approach.
Only 5% of orthopaedic surgeons have the skill base to carry out this surgery.
A hip replacement is required for a worn-out or damaged hip joint. It involves a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant.
Most hip replacements are very successful however over time, a hip replacement can wear out, dislocated or fail for many different reasons. Revision surgery helps to correct the problem so the hip can function normally again.
Hip arthroscopy is a highly specialised area of orthopaedic sports medicine, involving ‘keyhole’ surgery to address hip pain and return people to the activities they enjoy.
The development of advanced techniques in hip arthroscopy over the last few years has created new options for patients with hip pain, hip injuries, tendon problems, and early arthritis of the hip.
Just as shoulder and knee injuries can be repaired, we can now offer similar solutions for the hip.
These procedures bring athletes back to their sport, allow workers to return to work, enable return of comfort in everyday activity and often prevent or delay the need for joint replacement.
Conditions commonly addressed include:
Dr Maclean has engaged in advanced training in these specialised techniques. He has been able to offer this surgery since 2013 and is proud to have introduced this area of orthopaedic surgery to the Sunshine Coast. He is the only local surgeon able to offer these procedures.
Regardless of approach, hip replacement surgery is typically a highly successful procedure, relieving pain and restoring quality of life.
With over 20 years’ experience in joint replacement surgery, Dr Maclean typically performs the advanced technique of replacing the hip through a minimally invasive, muscle sparing, anterior approach.
This approach allows the joint to be replaced by moving muscles aside along their natural tissue planes, without detaching any tendons.
The benefit with this approach is that it can allow a more rapid recovery with less pain and more normal function after the hip replacement.
Because the tendons aren’t detached, the new hip is very stable and hip precautions are typically not necessary. This allows return to normal daily activities shortly after surgery with a reduced risk of dislocation.
